Thai Tuesday - Please Don’t Touch my head, and most definitely don’t point your feet at me!

So here’s something I’ve learnt while living here in my adopted home – temporary one anyway.

The head is considered the most important and highest part of the body – literally and figuratively. So no touching. You can touch your own head but don’t go touching someone else’s – especially a Thai person. This is a big no no. Even the affectionate ruffling of a child’s hair that you may think is cute. Don’t touch.

Conversely the feet are the lowest part of the body. Never ever point your feet at people or objects. When sitting on the floor tuck your feet underneath you and to the side so you’re not pointing at anyone.  And don’t touch anyone with your feet – oh no more footsies!!

I’ve probably done these things totally accidently but now that I know I will be aware.
