so we’ve been in Atyrau, kazakhstan for 2 weeks now and it’s time to move on…….blogs. This afternoon someone asked me if I was homesick already, homesick for Thailand? to be completely honest, no. Well actually what I’m missing right now are the Friday night massages that my hubby and I use to go to. Otherwise I think we’ve moved on quite nicely.

And so now to just completely move it’s time to shut down this blog and move on. Time to embrace our new adventure, our new life. So to farewell Thailand and Sea, Sand and Shells here are my photo’s from our last year in Thailand.

It was only after our trip there did I realize that I have still so much more to see and do in Thailand. Even my four years there were not enough. Someday maybe I’ll go back.

two weeks ago

this group of men came into our home in Thailand and packed our things.

it was 3 days of crazy busyness. they went through each room separating what we were going to leave behind in Thailand for storage and what we were going to bring with us to Kazakhstan. they worked hard and carefully and I was impressed. None of them were big men to say the least but they were strong moving things around with ease.

on the third day which was a Friday and with the house empty it finally hit me hard that we were moving. As I shared previously I was sad, sad that we were leaving such a wonderful place, a place where we met beautiful people and made friends with them, also a place we called home.

But all things come to an end we felt that it was time to move on.

the last photo is truck # 2 leaving with our things. right now our things are on a ship headed to Hamburg, Germany. I cannot wait till they arrive here in Kazakhstan…….in another 3 months (sigh).

in the meantime, well we have a settling in kit we are living out from and making do with what we have. (it always amazes me at what little we can live with!!)

p.s. i should be going live with the new blog soon. I need to be done with this one!!

Well we arrived 4 days ago and all is well. We were a little tired from the flights but i think we're caught up on sleep now. We like our house and are settling in with the 'settling in' kit that's been provided for us. Just the basic stuff.

We've been told that our surface shipment left Thailand on Sunday but unfortunately our air shipment never left and it's still sitting in Bangkok. That was disappointing but these things happen. What can yo do?

Anyway I hope to have my new blog up soon. I wasn't able to get my 2011 photos for Thailand up. Tha packers were moving quite quickly and my computer was packed so sorry about that.

I miss visiting your blogs and hope to get back to some kind of normalcy soon.

2010 in Thailand

2010 in Thailand was the year we travelled a lot. We realized that our time here would be over the following year and so made an effort to see more of the country. And with a young baby/toddler in tow it’s an effort.

This was was also the year that I lost my dad. In one of my last conversations with my Dad he reminded me not to take anything or anyone for granted and to always make the most of our opportunities. to always be thankful and that at the end of the day it’s family that matters.

I may never have the chance to live in Thailand again so we did make the most of it. I’m also so very thankful that my father was able to come and experience a little bit of Thailand with my family.

tomorrow is my last day in my house. I hope to get the photo’s for 2011 up before my access to my photo’s is shut down. thanks for coming and taking a look at our journey.

well today was the day the packers were scheduled and I was up early. there’s something beautiful about the stillness in the house while the kids are still resting.

I didn’t think that I’d be emotional at all about leaving but as I sat alone remembering these last 4 years, much has happened and I was a little sad. Thailand will always be close to my heart.

I really am not a list person!

the packers are scheduled to come tomorrow and I don’t think I’m ready. I wish it was as simple as having them come in, pack up and leave. well I guess it is for them but not for me.

it’s all about the lists for me – the inventory lists that I have to have done before they can start anything, and I hate it.

I don’t enjoy this part of the process. It’s unavoidable and so I try to keep the big picture in mind and why the inventory lists are important.

Anyway on the positive side of writing these lists is that it makes us realize how much stuff we have and we purge/downsize…..a lot!

well this is it (my last week in my house anyway), next week I’ll be living out of my suitcases..

It’s been a wonderful 4 years here in the Land of Smiles. The Thai’s are such gracious people who have such a beautiful culture and way to them that it’s been easy to call this place home.

I’ve loved every thing about it. The people, their culture, their way of life. The shopping and of course the food. I’m thinking that’s what I’ll miss the most.

And so here is to Thailand. This week I’ll be sharing photo’s from my stay here..…..hope you enjoy.

I’m not so sure if Sea, Sand and Shells will be an appropriate blog title for my adventures in landlocked Kazakhstan so I’ll be moving too to a new site. stay tuned!

we found out that we’d be leaving Thailand and moving on. Now we’re down to 18. yes,only 18 days left in the Land of Smiles and I’m sad and excited all at the same time!

our air shipment gets packed tomorrow and will take around 3 weeks to arrive. We’re told to pack items we can’t live without for at least 3 months while we wait for the rest of our shipment to arrive by sea.

I’ve gone back and forth trying to decide what to take and what to send later – it’s driving me crazy. I’m finding it a little challenging cause the weather will change, or so I’ve read.

Anyway I’ve packed some toys, books and board games for the kids and some warm clothes – actually a lot of warm clothes. And also some photo’s – to make it a little homely. There’s a settling in kit that is provided which has linens and things but that’s it. Which is great.

I’m including the flat iron – don’t want to be having bad hair days!!

not only was it amazing but it was humbling. To be in such close proximity to these giants was truly a humbling experience.

We just got back from visiting family Down Under and now we’re in countdown mode. We’ve literally hit the ground running trying to clean up, purge and pack. it feels like there just isn’t enough hours in the day!!

And on my wall (well one of them anyway) are my tapa cloths. you can click here for more information about them. the cloths are made from the bark of the paper mulberry tree. Because we’ve lived away from home for so long I make sure that I always have and use as décor in my home some of my Papua New Guinea stuff, like these cloths.

Actually the ones here are from my husbands family. Apparently this pattern/design is theirs. Each family/clan has it’s own.

I also used his family tapa design on our wedding day. You can see it on the side of the girls dress and the guys cummerbunds.

It’s been one of those weeks.

since coming back from Kazakhstan its like we’ve hit the ground running. I guess you can’t avoid it - when you’re getting ready to move there’s just a lot involved – no matter how many times you’ve done it, there is always so many things that need to get done.

I’m looking forward to the weekend. We’re of to the Flight of the Gibbons tomorrow and Sunday we’re shopping at Chatuchak market. My mum and siblings are still here so we’re kind of extra busy!!

I know it’s late again. but here it is.

Kazakhstan!!

So we aren’t really leaving Asia, cause Kazakhstan’s in Central Asia but then a part of it is in Europe. My husband and I just got back from our look see trip via Amsterdam and well let me just say this, it’s going to be a totally different adventure/journey to this stop in Thailand.

I don’t know much about Kazakhstan yet, except that it’s a landlocked country. But from what I saw and the people I met, we’ll be just fine.

To be totally honest with you I’m really looking forward to it – new adventures always get me excited.

It’s the journey that matters isn’t it….. not the destination. And we’re ready!

we have a little over a month and half before we are packed and shipped out of here so we are super super busy. I hope to visit other CV participants and see what’s happening in your corner’s.

Our visa’s where approved this week so hubby and I can finally travel next Monday. whenever I submit a visa application I always get anxious. I always wonder and worry about whether or not they’ll be granted.if

Well I guess I didn’t have to for this one – we have our visas to get into Amsterdam.

Today we had Tanysha’s birthday/farewell party. I’d like to say that it was a success. the kids were happy and of course my daughter is too so it’s a win/win for everyone!!

It’s been a busy week. planning the party, going to farewell lunches, and attending to the usual grind of everyday life.

So I’m very grateful that it’s Friday. I’m looking forward to the weekend.

so right now I’m not able to name a favorite fiction. actually I think that’s a difficult task for me because I have so many.

But here’s the thing – I believe that anything I’ve read that’s been able to transport me and my thoughts to another place and time is great fiction and therefore a favorite!

And even though it may be fiction there is always a lesson or something to be learnt.

The difference between fiction and reality? Fiction has to make sense.

I hope you’ve all have a lovely week and are looking forward to the weekend. I know I am.

Well today was a special day for Tanysha. she got to share a poem that she wrote. I was impressed with her work and her poem. Actually all the kids wrote some wonderful stuff – it was amazing to hear them.

Anyway not only did I get to celebrate her poem.

At the poetry celebrations I was thanked by a mom, who told me how great and strong a friend Tanysha is to her daughter. Apparently yesterday my daughter was hit in the stomach (the girl did get into trouble for it) for standing up for her friend. Tanysha mentioned non of it to me yesterday, but today I got the whole story.

I don’t know if I would have been so brave!

our weekends right now are for exploring Thailand, with my family. We visited the wat (temple) where there is a reclining Bhudda. It’s huge! Amazing actually – even Tanysha was impressed.

it was a year ago on a Thursday evening that I got that call I somehow knew would be coming, and it was the one I didn’t want to get.

the one when they told me that Dad had died peacefully and was now gone and no longer in pain. Even though it’s been a year the pain and loss still feels like it was only yesterday when I got that call.

tonight mom found it especially hard as I could see her recalling Dad’s last hours. Actually it’s been a tough week as she’s been remembering their last days together. Some memories are painful while others bring a smile to her face.

I miss Dad terribly but I also know that there is no more pain, and knowing that brings my heart peace.

Even after a year, not a day goes by when something or someone reminds me of my father and his happy and gentle spirit.

I’m missing You Dad….so very much.

I’ve been so bad with my weekly appointments of corner view.(sorry Francesca!) Life has been busy but I hate that I’m saying that because it sounds like an excuse. So here I am to post my CV even if it’s late.

Last weeks theme was “by the sea”. I was so looking forward to the theme because well I think it was just perfect for me, living in Thailand and all. But I didn’t show up (on time anyway) – but here I am.

I’m still here and oh yeah…..Happy Mother’s Day!

it’s been a while since I’ve been here. I miss you all and your blogs I wish I could come around and visit and see what’s happening in you’re neck of the woods. I will soon once things settle down!

So since the last time I blogged……..

* our medicals have been cleared and so we are definitely moving on to our next assignment.

* the kids Easter play went really well and the set/stage worked out, which is great.

* the gym competition hosted by the school ran smoothly it was awesome. and to make it even better Tanysha did really great. She placed in all her rotations and came in third overall. I was so excited for her.

* I’ve been busy allowing potential new tenants to come in and see the house. some days I enjoy doing it, other days I just want to say no!!

* but most importantly my mom, brother and sister are finally here – of course there was some drama and hiccups, with delayed flights which meant missed connection flights were missed and so forth and so forth.

But they’re here now and I’m trying to get a lot of things done.

Anyway here are some pictures from the weekend.

These last 2 photos – me and my mum, together for Mother’s Day. it doesn’t happen often so it was special.

my mother is a little sad – Dad’s death anniversary is at the end of this week so she’s going through a lot of emotions right now, just remembering. It’s been a tough couple of days.

corner view–what’s for lunch

It’s corner view time and this week’s theme is – What’s for Lunch? . For me it’s

Som Tum – also known as a Papaya Salad, served to me in a plastic bag.

It has carrots, tomatoes, a young papaya and green beans. If you like they’ll add dried shrimp.

All these ingredients, with some lime juice and other sauces are added together and pounded. for me it’s not Som Tum unless it has chili in it. I think that’s it’s signature ingredient, red chilies. They’ll leave them out if you tell them too, but I love it and always ask for 2!!

this is what I have maybe 2 or 3 times a weeks. It’s quick easy, cheap and I love it. sometimes I’ll have it with some smoked pork and sticky rice but otherwise it’s okay to have it on it’s own.

It’s taken me almost 3 years to finally feel comfortable to buy food off the street. I was so scared in the beginning but I’ve learnt to keep my eye out on the food that I choose to buy.

Thailand’s been home for the past 3 and a half years.

Last week’s theme for corner view was home. I know this is late but I’m going to do it anyway.

Last night we hosted our small group at home and we had an icebreaker – to share the number or countries and homes you’ve lived in.

well I got to thinking - before I married I lived in 4 different countries and in 7 different houses. after marriage I’ve lived in 4 different countries and 6 different homes.

It’s not always easy (especially with kids) to move often, but I find it to be exciting. The opportunities to learn about different people and their culture always gets me excited.

I think because I’ve moved so many times, I’ve learnt that the houses are always temporary but a home is where you are and what you make of it.

Every day is a journey, and the journey itself is home.

I managed to cross off a few things on that to do list I was talking about. with a 2 year old I’ve learnt not to force my daily schedule but to work around his. in a way JJ makes me slow down, breathe and sit with him to watch, The Wonder pets or the Backyardiagans! There are some interesting lessons in those programs!!

Okay so here goes, the beginning of my journey to count towards 1000 gifts……………and beyond! Gifts from God that in my haste to get things done, they go un noticed.

Palm Sunday and this week is Holy Week.

I have a “to do” list for this week that seems to be almost as long as my daughter’s arm!! I’m feeling overwhelmed just thinking about it, but I’m hoping that I’ll be slow and deliberate with everything that I have to get done.

I’m always tempted to just get through each thing on my list so that I can cross it off and be done with it. And because I’m so focused with getting through the list I think I miss so much of the little things in my life.

I’m going to use the significance of this week, Holy Week to make sure that as I go through my to do list, I’m daring myself to list my One Thousand Gifts. I’ve been reading the book and I’m enjoying it.

I think it’s time to take that challenge.

we had such a great time away at Hua Hin, another beach location in Thailand. We did nothing but swim, eat, play and just be.

We’re back at home now, tired from the sun but rejuvenated inside to make this home stretch now. We have about 50 days left of the school year, and so this is it.

clean bill of health….well almost!

spent another half of my day down at the Doctor’s. This time my husband and I had our medical checks.

it’s never fun to be poked and prodded, but after some hours and going from room to room and seeing different nurses I’m happy to say that all is well inside and out. For me and my husband.

of course there is that little issue of the weight. We are pushing it with our BMI’s so we’ve been told to take control of the weight! Oh gee how I wish is was that easy!!

Anyway we’re packed and ready to head out to the beach tomorrow. The weather has been a little funny lately, nothing of the cold sort, but just overcast and dull. Hopefully we’ll have a couple of sunny days ahead.

it’s been a month since the horrible quake and tsunami in Japan. It’s incredible that they are still feeling aftershocks. Remember I shared some time ago that as a school community we were going to make paper cranes(I must confess the paper crane making was hard!!) and try to raise money – well to date the school has made over 2000 paper cranes and raised over 500 000 baht(that’s about 16000 USD). We still have a couple more weeks to give. Every little baht counts!

I’m hoping you’re all having a great weekend.

we spent half the day today at the doctors with the kids having their medical check-ups done. These checks always make me nervous, but I’m relieved to say that all is well with my kids.

Rohan and I do ours tomorrow and I’m nervous for me!! I don’t enjoy these checks.

I was really hoping that my mum and siblings would be here tomorrow but it won’t be happening. So it looks like we’re spending Spring break on our own. I was hoping they’d be here to spend it with us but not to be. They should be here next week.

We have a week off school and it’s also Songkran – Thailand’s New Year. It’s also known as the Water festival so it will also be a wet week!! my kids and I always look forward to getting wet and wetting others but it’s more than just getting wet.

Many Thai’s will head to a Wat (temple) to pray and give food to the monks. Buddha images either in homes or at monasteries will also be cleansed by gently pouring fragranced water over them.

I always enjoy watching these kinds of activities. Although it’s been almost 4 years here I am still a tourist!

it’s 30 degrees Celsius tonight and it’s humid. it feels like the heat has finally arrived. Oh well, the cool weather and wearing layers was great while it lasted.

April is here and it’s going to be busy!

our school gymnastics club is hosting a competition, my mum, brother and sister will be coming to stay with us until we leave Thailand (I can’t wait!), I’m helping with the set and props for the kids Easter play, and I’m still trying to sell more stuff that I can’t take with me.

I’ll also be celebrating a birthday and of course it’s Easter! I really do like this time of the year!

today was parent/teacher conferences at school. Biggest difference I’ve experienced since I’ve been at this school is that the kids always lead the conference – the 2nd one of the school year anyway.

Tanysha had a guide to help her out with her talking points on what to share with us. The page above is a positive that she wrote about herself and also how she thinks she can be a better team mate.

She’s loving school and I’m so happy for her. She was excited to share with us what she’s learning at school and where she’s at, and how she thinks she can improve.

I like that they are encouraged to take ownership of their learning!!

We also had conferences with Renee’s teachers. Like Tanysha she’s also doing well. There was a lot more talking on where she is, where she can be and how she can get there.

It’s always nice to hear that my kids are doing well in school but what I love the most is to hear from their teachers on how my kids do relationally and socially with their peers and educators. Thankfully it’s always been positives.

I think that is just as important.

unusual weather and some good news

I’m not complaining but the weather here in Thailand lately has been very very unusual. In the 3 years I’ve lived here it’s usually around this time of the year that we start to brace ourselves for the unbearable heat that’s coming. There’s no warning or gradual build up, it just hits you!

But last Thursday and again today it’s 22 degrees Celsius and every where I turned today people were wearing layers. It looks so strange, real strange. But it’s so great that I don’t have to not sweat while I’m getting dressed in the mornings or while I’m trying to get Joshua ready for school.

The cool weather is really really gorgeous!

Well I have some good news to share – my table sold. Yippee! I was worried that it wouldn’t go and that I’d have to bring the prices down but it’s been taken and I’m happy.

Also, Joshua is better! Much better and today he went back to school. Reluctantly after having spent 2 weeks at home, but I heard he had a great time and I think he was happy to go back.

And finally my husband got the papers for his new job offer….and he signed them. I really want to share with you where we are heading too but I’ll wait till his work permit and our visas are done. I’ll share soon.

hiding and seeking

I haven’t come across a kid that likes being medicated. Mine certainly don’t fall into that category. My girls always come up with excuses to not have any kind of medicine even though they know it will do them good.

As for my son well he just hides them. yep, yesterday he took the bottles that he saw the nurse hand over to me and he hid them!

JJ’s been sick for the past 2 weeks and it’s been no fun. he’s coughing, has a very runny nose and oh yes, he’s throwing up too because he doesn’t know any other way to discharge the mucus!

It’s horrible.

I eventually found the bottles neatly stacked behind the DVD player with the remote sitting on top of them. JJ thought it was funny…………..and so did I, after I found them. I thought I had put them somewhere and couldn’t remember!

Well he’s getting better and I’m thankful!

I guess I could’ve posted photo’s of all the soi dogs here in Thailand. soi means ‘street’ and there are so many street dogs around here. But I didn’t carry my camera around with me this past week. I still don’t really know why there are many so many of these dogs. I’ve heard that they don’t put the dogs down because of their religious beliefs but I’m not really sure.

Anyway so why these 4 legged items – well it’s almost time to move and so I’m trying to sell some things before the move. And these 2 tables are for sale.

it’s been a while since I’ve been here.

there’s a lot happening right now and so my blog’s taken a back seat.

there are changes ahead for me and my family which is probably why things have been busy around here lately. I’ll share on that a little later. But there’s also a lot happening around the world that we just have to be aware of.

When your 6 year old daughter comes home and talks of the recent tragic events in Japan and how her Japanese classmates are sad and scared it jolts you into putting things into perspective, prioritizing what really needs your attention and what is really important at the end of the day.

As a school community we’re making origami paper cranes. As you probably know paper cranes have a tremendous symbolic value in Japan and around the world, representing the will to live and to carry on as well as the hope for peace.

I’ve never made a paper crane before but I want to do this.

today is the last day of Francesca’s week of colors.

Today’s color is black! I love the black. it’s my go to color when it comes to clothes and it is what I’m most comfortable wearing. actually today I went and bought myself another black pair of pants and a black turtle neck blouse to wear to a dinner that we’ve been invited to Sunday night.

it will be ‘dinner in the dark’, literally – it should be interesting!

Anyway I do have some photo’s to share. I know these animals look gray but there are some black ones. And these ones after they had their bath in the river just looked so beautiful.

I have seen such beautiful furniture made from teak wood. this place (above) in Chiang Rai is where one artist displays his artwork. sorry no picture taking was allowed of his ‘wood’ artwork inside but we were allowed to take photo’s of the temple like building – made from teak wood.

it’s been crazy lately!

I feel like things have been a little crazy lately. A little like this mobile that just keeps on spinning which ever direction the wind or any kind of movement is coming from. last week I constantly had this feeling that I hadn’t gotten something done, or I’ve missed an appointment or something. And you know when that begins to happen, it’s safe to say that maybe I’m doing to many things.

Well today was a time to take it slow day. We had lunch with hubby’s sister and her husband. We actually had dinner with them last Tuesday night for the first time ever. I don’t know why she left her family and that it’s only this year that she’s reached out to them again. Which is great. But whatever the reason, it was before me but I’m thrilled that she’s come back to them and hubby and his sister’s have opened their arms and hearts to her and her husband.

Whatever happened it’s in the past. It’s was a reminder to me that life it too short to hold any grudge. I’m just happy that I’ve finally met all of my husbands siblings and especially happy for my kids that they’ve met everyone that matters.

Anyway apart from the busyness of life I look back on last week as a beginning. A beginning of new relationships with the promise of something beautiful.

today was a sad day for me. my sadness is not because my father did not live a good life but that he went too soon. what I consider to be still young. Oh how cruel cancer can be……

My dad would have turned 61 today. it’s his birthday and we would’ve celebrated it. not with a big party or anything but I know my brother and sisters would have made him a cake and gathered everyone together to sing him and wish him a happy birthday.

I would’ve called him and had my children sing him happy birthday over the phone and then we would’ve talked about anything and everything and then I’d have wished him a very happy birthday.

Because that’s what we always did.

there is an ache in my heart knowing that I can’t do that anymore.

But today I chose to celebrate him and his life and remember it all. I called home, spoke with my sisters and we shared some memories. I had hoped to speak to mum but she wasn’t available. I know this day would have been a difficult one for her.

we remembered together and we celebrated you Dad………..…

was full of waffles, cakes and international food.

Saturday night was the International Food Fair (IFF). this event is the school’s major fundraiser. We have booths from South America, Africa, Japan, China, Israel, Netherlands, Australia, England, India, New Zealand, the USA and of course Thailand. It’s the one night where you can be in one place and taste the world – I love it.

It’s safe to say that this weekend was all about the food. My cakes above where my contribution to a cake walk game that we gym parents were hosting. We received 80 cakes and they were all played for.

On the home front – there are some changes are coming, and I feel ready. I’ll share more later.

A couple of years ago Tanysha asked me what my favorite color was and I told her it was blue. She’d then look at me funny and say why blue – that’s a boy color, girls are suppose to like pink!

well today she likes that I like the color blue and I’m realizing that she has issues with stereo types!!

For as long as I can remember I’ve always loved blue – all shades of the color blue! It’s my go to color. I find that it relaxes me and calms me down!

the weekend

we worked this past weekend. we got our hands dirty, broke out a sweat and used muscles that we hardly use. Yeah I’m a little sore, but looking back on the weekend I’m so glad I did it.

for so long I’ve used Joshua as an excuse and yeah maybe he is a bit young to be out there on a building site but he was so good – he managed to entertain himself with the village kids and stayed away from danger.

I’m thankful that I got to experience this. I know the families are grateful that we went and helped build their houses and hand them their keys. It was pure joy. But I know that I also received, nothing material or physical but I know I received something.

I’m learning that It’s a beautiful thing when we give our time and ourselves to others and for others. we’re blessed, and blessed richly. It’s almost therapeutic that I ask myself why I don’t do it often enough.

It’s hard for me to explain exactly what I’m feeling now but I know I received for my heart and soul.

We had been dating or a while, maybe a couple of months – I can’t remember exactly. anyway, one day while we were just sitting, not doing anything in particular but just sitting and enjoying each other’s company I asked him……..

”do people fall in love or learn to love?”

He looked at me strangely and thought, this must be some kind of trick question. She must be testing me to see how I’ll answer. Well it wasn’t.

I was just curious.

I had seen couples so in love and then not in love, I’d witnessed marriages slow down, lose their flame and even lose love and I’d think to myself – what happened? Surely they must have fallen in love and that’s why they got engaged and married. I’m sure they fell head over heels for each other and that’s why they took that next step isn’t it – but what happened?

It’s hard to say, hard to understand…. but it happens.

I fell in love. Yes I was like that little puppy head over heels. Even after we married, our early years of marriage, I still was! 3 children later, a mortgage, worries, the grind of daily living I’m still in love but I have moved myself to the path of learning to love.

We’re so different. Of course he’s a man and I’m a woman. The way we were brought up makes us different, the way we think makes us different, the way we react to situations is different but isn’t that the beauty of marriage, of love?

Isn’t it here, in the safety of that marriage that we learn to love, embrace and accept those differences? Isn’t here where we see the big picture and choose to get on and stay on that learning to love path.

I’ve learnt that it’s a choice. And to make that choice is love……. And it is a choice that needs to be made daily.

He did eventually answer me – he said both. I think we fall in love first and then to make it work we learn to love……daily!

it’s hard for me to just pick one actor, because I don’t just have one, I have many. And there are many because I love movies. I love going to the cinema getting popcorn and soda and then getting involved in a story and being transported to wherever it may be……

I loved Shawshank Redemption with Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins. I also enjoyed Invictus with Morgan Freeman again and Matt Damon. Another movie I really enjoyed was the Other Boylen Girl.

I liked him in his 21 Jump Street Days and I still like him today. I love how he doesn’t just fit into one particular type of movie but that he can do so many different things. Remember Edward Scissor hands? (not one of his best but still!!)

missing my baby

I thought I’d be ok. That I would be that mom who is totally fine with their child travelling away from home and having them be away for a couple of nights ………….well apparently I’m not.

It’s past midday, the kids would be coming home from school soon and I’m missing my baby.

I’m wondering if she’s okay, whether or not if she’s having fun with her friends (actually she didn’t look too happy this morning while waiting to get on the bus, and I’m thinking maybe because her friends were on a different bus) and if she’s missing home!

Well whatever it is I’m missing her. it’s a different feeling and not a very pleasant one.

Gosh what am I going to do when Renee really wants to try out boarding school!! She’s talked about it and I love that she’s open to it but I’m not. I went to boarding school and I totally loved it. And I do think because of it I’m able to handle living away from family and home so well, but my baby……..that’s a totally different story!

today I was given a compliment!

a compliment that should have had me thrilled instead I was like oh no I still need too loose some more weight, I’m not where I want to be and on and on and on…..

when really all I should have said was ‘thank you”.

I’m still learning to graciously accept compliments and just respond with a thank you. I still find that hard to do. The bible study I’m doing is shedding some light on my self talk and how it can either be constructive, destructive, ineffective or powerful.

Maybe because the words I speak to myself are not often positive that when kind and positive words are spoken to me I find them difficult to accept.

I’m working on my thought closet!!

Anyway my friend and I had lunch today and she told me that I looked great and that I didn’t need to loose anymore weight. I have lost 6 pounds and I do feel good! So thank you Shamita!

spent the whole day in the sun cheering on Renee’s soccer team at the championship games.

I guess I’m a soccer mom, one of those who can’t sit and watch. Instead I walk up and down the side lines and really get into the game. I think my daughter’s ok with it cause she hasn’t told me to sit down……yet. All season long the girls weren’t able to win a single game but today they turned up. they only lost one game in their division, and so had a chance to play off for the championship game. Unfortunately they lost that game and had to settle for third.

I’m so proud of Renee and her team. they really showed some heart today. And well I got really burnt and my voice is hoarse tonight.

Friday’s Fave Five # 65

It’s Friday and it’s time to look back on the week. Many good things, bad things even some ugly moments – yep a lot happens in a week. Life is never boring!

Anyway here are the things/moments that made my week, in particular order, here they are:

1. Meeting new people. I love the opportunity to meet new people and the possibilities out there to make some new friendships. This week I met some new people to the community and it was lovely.

2. Generous people. We’re raising funds for a habitat for humanity trip that we are joining and Tanysha wanted to have a go at selling some bricks! Well she came home one afternoon and was so excited that she was able to sell. She made 1500 baht which is around 46 US Dollars. I was so proud of her and thank you to those ladies who bought from her.

3. Receiving mail. the books that I ordered arrive during the week, along with the Time magazine, Better Homes and gardens mag and the Woman’s day mag. I love it!! I’ve started both books at the same time and I’m really enjoying them.

4. A new bible study. This week our bible study classes began and I think I’m going to enjoy my study. It’s about our minds and how we talk to ourselves and what we say to ourselves and about ourselves. I need a makeover! I know it may make me feel uncomfortable but I always believe that it’s a good thing to help me grow in my faith and hopefully become a better person.

5. And finally a new painting. I wasn’t too sure how this painting that I wanted done for me would turn out, but I’m so happy with the result. I’m so looking forward to picking it up on the weekend and hanging it on my wall that has been bare for like forever!! It may look familiar to some of you out there.

I don’t often count down the days to some special day or event.

And I certainly don’t count how many days my kids have been in school. I have noticed though that in the younger grades they like to do this. What’s neat about it is they include it their days lessons, especially for math.

Today I sent Tanysha to school with 100 goldfish to contribute to the classes ‘nueng-roy trail mix. Tanysha shared that other kids brought in cheerios, fruit loops, jelly babies and Japanese rice crackers to name a few.

It was the highlight of the day for her. This is what she came home with - a ‘fruitloop necklace’.

January’s come and gone and it’s just gone by so fast I’m wondering if this will be the pace for the rest of the year.

I had so many lists with things that I wanted to do or al least sign up for in this month and well I just haven’t done any of them. Like signing up for the Muay Thai (thai kickboxing class), or getting in touch with the music teacher to start learning the guitar and that Zumba class I’ve been wanting to try out. I have to do something for me, right?

Hopefully February will be the month I get it done.

My books finally arrived.. I’ve been waiting for them anxiously. I’m tempted to start reading them although I still have to finish off this book.

life’s been pretty busy lately but it’s all good. To tell you the truth my mind’s been kind of everywhere that I’ve not been able to put sentences together!! some days I get all excited and I feel like I have so much I want to share with you all but then when I come and sit at the computer, it just escapes me.

anyway tomorrows our first free Saturday in a long while. Soccer is over now and so we’re planning to go to the movies. I hope it happens, things just never go as planned around here.

beginning of the week

how do you plan your meals for the week?

Do you go through your pantry and fridge first and then put together a menu? or do you go through your week, see what everyone has going and then do a menu plan or do you just take each day as it comes?

Recently I had to throw away a lot of food. I overstocked and just never got around to using stuff that I thought I needed and would use. It was a big waste, and I hated that I had to do that. So now my pantry is totally bare, and I am making every effort to keep it that way.

For me Sunday nights is when I go through everyone’s schedule for week, then I check my pantry and fridge to see what I have. Depending on those two things I put together a dinner menu for the week. Whatever that I don’t have, I make a list and grocery shop on Mondays.

It’s been great so far – no overstocked pantry, no packed to capacity fridges and I’m happy.

the dinners I make are usually quick and easy. Easy for me and enjoyable for everyone.

On Sunday………………….two birds with one post

17 days into the new year and I think have my word, what word your wondering well my word for the year.

Last week I came across this blog and it got me thinking. Thinking that how every new year, I start out by focusing on the things that I’m not doing well or enough of and then resolve to hopefully do them better in the new year. the first couple of days, maybe weeks I do well but then I start to slacken off and then I get discouraged and then it’s just a whole spiral effect after that, discouraging if I may say so and then of course I feel like a total failure..

Anyway so after being inspired by this post I’ve decided to make a SOUL Resolution too. Imagine that, resolving to better something on the inside of me, not the outside but inside. Isn’t that where the real you and me comes from – the inside, the issues of our heart? Well It got me excited and I started praying and mulling over it.

And after 2 weeks here is my word:

COURAGE!

Courage to believe in God again. The COURAGE to trust in Him, the courage to have hope. Oh yes and the courage to see God in everything.

The dictionary defines courage as;

a quality of spirit that enables you to face danger or pain without showing fear

or also known as bravery, fortitude, will, and intrepidity, is the ability to confront fear, pain, risk/danger, uncertainty, or intimidation. ...

The quality of a confident character not to be afraid or intimidated easily but without being incautious or inconsiderate; The ability to do things which one finds frightening

Well I know me and I’m not very brave, I don’t have those qualities. I lack that confidence that I should in Him when the bible tells me that I can trust in Him.

And so this is my prayer that this year will be one marked with COURAGE.

And so how is God calling me to be more confident or bold?

I’ve seen and read them all – the promise that if you wear this or that then you’ll feel great about yourself and therefore feel confident. Or a pearly white smile will boost your confidence. And such things may be true – but for how long?

Do we really need material and superficial reassurances to be confident?

Don’t you think these are fleeting like self esteem – here one day, gone the next.

There are days when I feel like I’m on top of the world and others when I want to crawl under my bed and stay there. It happens. Yes I’m human and my confidence gets shot down.

I realize that here then is where I need COURAGE. The courage to believe the bible, where God promises that the work He began in me he’ll complete. (Philippian 1:4)

I need the courage to believe that nothing can separate me from his love, nothing. (Romans 8:35). Not even a lack of confidence.

Some days it easier to believe in and live by God’s word, while on other days well it’s just plain hard. But there’s got to come a time when it has nothing to do about how I’m feeling but everything to do about who God is and what He’s promised.

I’ll get there. One day at a time.

Today…………… Joshua had an awesome day at school, Renee’s soccer team was defeated badly and Tanysha is over the moon that she’s now able to ride Renee’s old bike to school.

Tomorrow……….I’m buying birthday presents for the parties that my girls have been invited too, having coffee with a friend, and also getting a massage.

Yesterday ……………… I overheard a high school kid telling his friend that someone called him the ‘N’ word (really??!, It made me sad), made my first ever Greek salad and I wondered why I’ve never tried it before and was happy to see that our Starbucks nearby has reopened after being closed for a month for renovations.

Corner View - Winter

Happy New Year CV Bloggers!

It’s great to be back at corner view. I trust you all had a lovely Christmas and holiday break and are now rejuvenated for the new year.

So today’s theme is Winter – well gee that’s a pretty tough one for me right off the bat. As you know in my corner there is no winter! I’m not a cold person and so that suits me just fine.

I’ve never seen snow falling from the sky and have no idea how it feels when it’s falling.

So like I said there is no white winter here but we do experience cooler weather around December and January and we enjoy it immensely because we know the heat is just around the corner, and she won’t be too kind.

back to normal, normal

Now everyone’s schedules are back to normal. especially mine. Hubby’s been back at work for a week now and the kids returned to school yesterday. I was a little bummed that I got sick over the weekend and we weren’t able to visit the Ancient City together on our last weekend of the holidays, like we had hoped..

Anyway now I can make some solid plans for the hours that the kids are away at school. I try to make sure to be done by 2.30pm at least cause that’s when the kids get home and then of course it’s their time until bedtime.

Of course JJ is still at home with me but it’s easier to work one kid in to your schedule than 3.

I’m looking into some classes to take up, we’ll see what happens.

Friday’s Fave Five # 64

TGIF! I’m ready for the weekend. Nothing special planned but just glad that the weekend is here. I can’t believe the week has gone by so fast – well it’s one down and now 51 weeks left to this young new year.

So it is Friday and it’s time to look back on the week to share some favorites. I hope you have had a lovely week too and will share what’s blessed you this week.

1. Great weather. I know the heat is coming around the corner so I’m taking in the lovely cool weather that we’ve had all week. It really is pleasant.

2. phone conversation with my youngest sister. whenever I call home I often only ever speak to the sister born after me. I am closer to her than the others. But this week it was great to chat with my younger sister. It was a different kind of conversation – she just finished 12th grade. There is a big age difference.

3. Reading Again. It’s been a while since I’ve picked up a novel and this week I did. I’m loving the book already.

4. Waking Early. Rohan headed back to work this week so I’ve been getting up early. Once he leaves the house is still quiet. With all the kids still resting it’s nice to have the place to myself.

5. And finally I lost weight. Friday’s is when I weigh in (for myself) and today I did and I was surprised to see that I had lost 2 pounds. I feel so good about myself.

Wat Rong Khun

the bridge we had to walk across to take a look inside. the hands you can see is what the artist describes as the “pit of hell”.Our visit to the White Temple was a wow moment for me.. It definitely wasn’t like any of the other temples we’ve been too.. For starters it’s all white and then also covered with mirrored tiles, the outside anyway. when you walk into the room there is a large Bhudda sitting in front and then when you turn around to come back out there is a mural of the artists impression and expression of certain world events. Personally I found it to be very very interesting to say the least. I guess that’s the beauty of being an artist – you can express yourself. And I guess if you are financing the whole project with your own money then you can do and say what you want to.

The white temple is actually one mans vision/dream and project, an artist from Chiang Rai. You can read about him here. You can also read about the temple here and here.

And then here below are the public toilets – the Thais like to refer to them as the most expensive restrooms in Thailand.

Time Out

I’ve been non stop these last couple of days cleaning, organizing, putting stuff in boxes and dropping them off at the store that supports local charities around here.

And it feels good.

But today my feet are hurting from standing too much and so I’m putting them up. I’ve got a book in my hands that I’m excited to start. It’s different to what I usually read , but different is good.

New Year, New Beginnings

I spent this afternoon boxing our Christmas decorations. I had to get it done while JJ was napping, or else it wouldn’t have been done today. Of course Joshua wasn’t too happy to see that the tree was gone when he woke up.

Right now I have this desire to go through the house and clean and organize our home with the turn of the calendar. Rohan has mentioned it again that it’s time to move, soon, so with that in mind the urge is even stronger to purge, donate and organize.

As I make my plan of action on how to go through all the physical piles/ things throughout the house, I’m also making a mental note on some things that I hope to do this year.

spend more time doing the things I enjoy. Reading, scrapbooking, and maybe even take up a class to learn something new.
volunteer more, give my time and energy more generously
and also to cook more often at home. I confess this is not something that I do often enough.

Friday’s Fave Five # 63

Well this is it, the last Fave Five for the year. I know I’ve been away from here for a while but here I am for the last one for the year.

Thanks Susanne for Fave Five. it’s a good exercise to look for our blessing whether they are big or small in our lives.. I’ve only been that occasional participant to Fave Five but I’ve come across some great people and it’s been fun reading their blogs and counting their blessings too.

This weeks been much fun and it’s hard to pick just five, but I’ll try. But here they are;

1. Travelling. Tonight while having dinner with my husband we were talking about the week we just spent in Chiang Rai and we realized that we’ve done quite a bit of travelling this year. – not only in Thailand but to other parts of the world. I’m grateful that we are able to travel as a family.

2. Cool Weather. I’m not a cold weather person but this week that we spent in the mountains was wonderful. I enjoyed having to wear layers for a change!

3. Rare Opportunity. Our trip to Chiang Rai allowed us to visit the long neck tribe people. I must be honest and say that I was excited to be able to make this visit. I’ve seen a couple of documentaries on these people and have always been fascinated by them and to finally be able to see them, was awesome.. A lot of thoughts have been going through my mind since visiting but I’ll share them in another post. Otherwise I’m thankful for these opportunities that I have.

4. Pretty Flowers. I love flowers and what simple joy it brings to my heart. The King’s mother’s garden was very pretty to see and it just made me happy.

5. The holidays. I enjoy these days when there are no schedules and no plans - just relaxing and being. I love it.

Chiang Rai

We’re back at home after a couple of days in a much cooler place of Thailand. Chiang Rai was beautiful and the weather made it that much more enjoyable. We spent 2 days with a tour guide who showed us many places. We visited the King’s mother home, The White Temple, the Black Temple (art gallery), some of the Hill Tribe villages, the gates to cross over to Burma, the Mighty Mehkong River, Laos and of course we also enjoyed watching the elephants bathing. That was probably the highlight for my kids!!

We don’t have plans for the New Year. It’s just another day, I guess. Except of course the another opportunity to start over.

Thailand is gearing up to welcome in the New Year. 2554 on the Thai Calendar. Christmas celebrations are not that exciting here for the Thai’s welcoming in the New Year, there will be many parties going on with fireworks and also releasing of many lanterns.

We had a great day yesterday celebrating the birth of Jesus and relaxing, and of course watching the excitement on my kids faces as they opened their presents.

We’re heading to the mountains of Thailand today to spend a couple of days in Chiang Rai. It’ll definitely be different from the beach.

I’m looking forward to the guided tours – yes we are going to be local tourists!

The house is quiet right now. The kids are watching a movie and falling in and out of sleep and can’t wait for the morning to come when they’ll get to open their presents.

We just got home after spending a couple of days soaking up the sun and sea at another of Thailand’s amazing beaches. we’re a little burnt and tired and so it’s wonderful to be back at home.

tonight though I wish I were at home with my mum, sisters and brother to spend this Christmas Eve with them. It’s our first one without Dad. My heart is a little heavy. Actually a lot heavy. I’ve been crying a lot lately these last couple of days. I’m just missing him very much right now. It’s holidays like this when families are gathering to be together that it’s a little tougher to get through.

I called home tonight hoping to speak to my mum but couldn’t. My sister told me that mum knew I was on the phone and was already in tears so I’ll try again tomorrow.

I miss him dearly but he’ll always remain in my heart.

Busy.

We are still here!

my kids are finally out for the winter break, and the craziness has finally slowed down. Trying to get everything done can really stress you out and make you forget what this season is really all about.

I love this time of the year but it at the same time it always makes me so aware of how we are never with our big families. My husband and I come from big families, and I miss being surrounded by my nieces and nephews, and my sisters and brothers but it just doesn’t happen.

Some year’s we’ve made it possible but most of the times we are on our own. Making new friends and family.

And so we just make cards and send them and send packages later.

Monday Morning Blues

Woke up to some heavy rain this morning. It’s unusual for this time of the year, but we’ll take it. humid, sticky and smoggy is how it’s been the last couple of days so the rain was very welcome.

What’s not so good, is that JJ was up at 4 not because of the rain but because of an ear ache. I hate it when kids have ear aches or tooth aches – they just seem to be harder to soothe and comfort.

So it looks like my plans for today need a little tweaking…..

It’s the last week of school before it’s the Christmas break and so there are concerts, class parties, soccer games and of course getting gifts for their teachers.

We just got back from our long weekend. We’re tired from swimming. Swimming a lot, in both the open sea and the pool in our villa.

On Saturday night there was a fashion show show casing products by Jim Thompson. Oh I love his collection and then Sunday Thailand celebrated their King’s 83rd birthday.

We had a lovely time just doing nothing and enjoying ourselves. I’m going to miss Thailand when it’s time to leave.

Well I’m anticipating some craziness in the next 2 weeks before school gets out!.

Life is busy right now. I love it and hate it all at the same time!!!

In the midst of it all my girls have had a bunch of firsts.

Tanysha lost her front tooth, had her first sleep over and then a long weekend away with a good friend and her family and then her first gymnastics competition. Which she did very well. She just missed out on placing – she got 4th!

Renee also had her share of firsts – first debate where her team won! First soccer game as a member of the girls under 13 school team and then her first performance on the beginners school band!! The band concert was just awesome. She’s come a long way with the trumpet and even better she’s loving it.

I’m thankful that I’ve been able to be there all of these first – even in all the busyness!

And now it’s a long weekend and we’re off to the beach!

me: it’s an American Holiday.

Tanysha: So what is the holiday for?

Me: well I believe it’s a time when families gather together and give thanks and be grateful for each other and many other things.

Tanysha: So are we going to do Thanksgiving?

Me: No sweety, I don’t think so because we’re not American’s.

Tanysha: Well I am, so I say we should!

Me: sigh…..

Don’t know why but this is one US holiday that I haven’t caught up with yet. Who knows maybe next year.

Friday’s Fave Five # 62

It’s been a busy week and I’m thankful that it’s finally over and the weekend is here.

Here’s Five things that made it a happy week for me.

1. The Opportunity to share about my home country. We had international day yesterday and I’m thankful to be able to share a little about my country. It’s good to remember where you are from and what’s great about home.

2. Alone time with my eldest daughter. We don’t spend much time together. Sometimes it’s because she would rather be with her friends but other times it’s my fault. I’m so busy with Joshua and Tanysha that Renee does kind of get left out. So today we had lunch together downtown and did some shopping. We had a great time.

3. Sleep. last night I slept well. I haven’t slept well in a long while but last night was good uninterrupted sleep. My son must have been tired too.

4. Friends that just help. It’s such a blessing when friends just step in and help when you need it – even without having to ask! I had to make an emergency trip downtown for Joshua to see a ENT specialist and of course I was worried that I’d be leaving the 2 girls behind. But my dear friend offered to take Tanysha home with her after gymnastics practice and of course Renee is okay to stay with our helper at home. I was so thankful for that. JJ had some bleeding in his ear but all is okay.

5. Just happy and thankful. Life is good right now, a little busy but all things are good.

I”m Feeling just a little Proud here!

So the song was a hit….well okay maybe not with the 1st 2 classes/rotations, but by the time we got to the 3rd class, the kids rocked it!!

They were engaged and curious to try out a new language. Never mind feeling awkward and maybe sounding a little silly – they did it. They sang head, shoulders, knees and toes in my language and I was so proud of them.

The whole day went smoothly. the crafts I choose for the kids to do were fun and simple and the information that I shared – well they took it all in. They couldn’t believe that while downtown Bangkok has a population of 12 million people, it is double compared to the total population of PNG. yes we are a small island.

Well the kids had a fun day full of learning experiences (I know Tanysha did). The other countries they visited today were Germany and Switzerland where they did some yodeling and ate Swiss chocolate and German sausages. They also visited Thailand and learnt to play some local instruments and of course enjoy the Thai sweets. And then they also visited Mexico, Honduras and the Dominican Republic where they tried on and learnt about the national dresses of these countries and also tried some traditional dishes from there. I’m sure they all walked away with something.

I know I did. I learnt some new things too.

I’m exhausted. my feet are tired from standing and my voice is sore from all the talking – but all so worth it. Really!

Right now – totally suffering from lack of sleep!!

It’s been all things Papua New Guinea this week. My home country!I’ve been busy preparing for tomorrow’s International Day! 120 kids, first graders to be exact hopefully will have fun learning a little about my country.

I think the highlight should the the kids learning the popular head, shoulders, knees and toes in my language!!

Friday’s Fave Five # 61

Oh I’ve been looking forward to this Friday. Hubby comes back tonight so it’s definitely a good Friday for me. I’ve had a great week too. A little stressed and a little ugly at times (snapping at my kids and not being patient!!) so I’m glad that it’s Friday cause the weekend is here….

Well it is that time of the week, so here’s 5 random things that were highlights.

1. Kind Words. It’s amazing how kind spoken words can lift your spirit and encourage you to keep on going. I received some kind and encouraging words from a woman I don’t know very well and it’s what I needed. i was blessed.

2. Helpers. So the school will celebrate International Week next week. The climax of the week will be where 25 classrooms throughout the elementary school will be transformed into a representation of 25 different countries. Of course I’m representing Papua New Guinea and my family is the only family so I need help. Hubby will be away for work and can’t help me on that day but I have some lovely women who have volunteered to be ambassadors for my PNG on that day. I am so grateful!

3. Shopping with a friend. It was fun to get out and have some girl time with some good people. It was great to get my mind of things. And a welcome break from the preparations that I’ve been doing for International week.

4. Starbucks. I know it’s expensive and it does add up so I only get a drink once in a while. And this week I treated myself to a drink and it was good.

5. Quotes. I love reading and I love it when certain quotes just jump out at you and this one below did that.

The Weekend

Hubby left over the weekend for a long work trip. I hate it when he has to make these trips. Granted it’s not very often that he has to and I’m thankful for that, but when he does it throws everyone off – especially the kids. Tanysha is missing her daddy dearly.

Soccer started too. Both girls had their games on at the same time. So there was a lot of going and coming from one field to the next. JJ enjoyed it immensely.

Can you believe I had my first Krispy Kreme donut here in Thailand, after almost 4years. They opened a shop a couple of months ago. Let me just say that I have never seen or heard of lines being so long for a doughnut!! People have been standing in line for over 2 sometimes 3 hours just for doughnuts. Anyway Renee spent Saturday with some friends and they decided to get some. Yes they stood in line – but thank goodness, she didn’t wait hours – only 30minutes!! The novelty must be wearing off.

Well it’s going to be an interesting and busy week for me – holding down the fort.

Friday’s Fave Five # 60

I’ve been away for a couple of weeks now from listing my favorites for the week. So I thought I’d get back with the start of November.

So with the beginning of a new month, here are 5 things that made me happy this week.

1. Cool weather! Even on an overcast day in Thailand it's still hot and sticky but this week we’re enjoying such lovely weather. Everyone can’t stop talking about it. The mornings are cooler that I’m able to exercise later than usual without it being too hot. It then remains cool throughout the day too. It’s gorgeous!

2. Rejoicing and praising with a friend. A friend of mine does “Prison Ministry” On Mondays and Friday’s she visits a prisoner in one of the many prisons here in Bangkok . This week the lady she’s been visiting for the last couple of years was finally released on Wednesday. After 16 years in prison she got on a plane and headed back home, which for her was South Africa.

3. Aspiring kid. For now, my 6 six year old told us that she wants to be a doctor when she grows up. I know this may change later on, maybe even next week she’ll want to be something else, but for now I don’t mind it the Doctor aspirations. I will dream with her.

(the doctor in our community compound was kind enough to help her out with her class project and loaned her the stethoscope and coat!)

4. Coffee and Chocolate. Sometimes I wonder if it’s these 2 things that help me get through the days. Lately I’ve been busy and especially with International Day coming up in 2 weeks I’m starting to stress again……

5. NBA. The season has finally started and I know it’s a long one too – 82 games long. The LA Lakers are off to a great start 5-0. I’m hoping for a 3-peat!!

I think it’s famous – or well known at least.

Have you read it?

I just finished reading it again a couple of days ago.

The first time I read it was back in 10th grade because we had to as a class. But this time around I read it because I wanted too. I love the story. the humor, and how social issues are viewed through the lens of a young girl.

It’s a wonderful book.

After Halloween and Candy it’s Back to School

With the start of a new month the kids are back at school again. the girls went back yesterday and JJ goes back today.

the 1 week break was good for all of us. Although I think my kids prefer the structure and routine that comes with school days.

I’m looking forward to November. soccer games, a gymnastics competition, International Day, life group meetings, visiting a Thai church, and of course birthdays – my daughters and mom’s, celebrated on the same day!

speaking of birthday, my dear hubby celebrated his last Friday. He had the day off work and so he spent time with the kids. Which I though was very generous of him. and of course the kids where able to be with him on his special day!

We made him a cheese cake because my dear just loves cheesecakes!

Planting for Others

Our trip last weekend included a stop at a farm acquired by Global Neighbors for the sole purpose of supplementing the refugees diet with fresh produce.

We volunteered to go plant some fruit trees. So we got our gloves and spades and set to work. Our small group (above) managed to plant just over 50 fruit trees along with some banana trees.

The energy from our kids was uplifting and their enthusiasm was contagious as they understood what we were doing.

Of course the next morning as we headed up to the camp we had some aching bodies!! It was hard work but very rewarding.

As a family we’ve continued to talk about our trip to the border and realize again how fortunate we are, and therefore are really obligated to help others.

Corner View - Pondering

We just got back from our trip to the border. I’m still a little overwhelmed from what I saw and learnt. Since our actual visit into the camp (which was Monday) you could say I’ve been pondering a lot these past 2 days.

What a timely theme for me. we sat together and we listened to a life testimony. Joshua was so tired after helping and playing with the carnival games for the kids.

One look at the camp and the faces of the refugees ( a lot of them children), you want to hear everyone’s story, because they all do have a story to tell.

I’m still pondering over the realities of their lives. When I think of the alternative and what they ran away from ….. things are a little better. But why does it have to be like that?

I’m still taking it all in. I hope to share more later.

I love holidays. Whether it’s getting on a jet and flying somewhere with children in tow or just driving down the road and visiting new places – the goal is always the same – a time to relax, have quality time as a family, to discover and learn and most importantly to have fun – together.

It can get stressful with young kids but that is all part of the fun, isn’t it!?

Counting Down and Ducks

4 more days till we travel to the border of Thailand and Burma, to visit the refugee camp. I’m a little anxious because I’m taking JJ, but I’m ready for the adventure and experience, as a family.

We’ll be taking the school supplies that people generously donated and purchased for the school that we (the church) supports, and we’ll also be staging a carnival for the children.

Hence the ducks.

I thought the game assigned to me “floating ducks’ was suppose to be one of the easier once to put together. Boy was I wrong! Finding the ducks wasn’t the problem. trying to get them to float was! I know their ducks, they’re suppose to float.

Anyway we improvised. I glued them all to some coffee cup lids and voila…..they now float.

We had a wet weekend.

All weekend long it was grey and dull and the skies remained open while the rain fell steadily. It definitely had us finding things to do inside our homes. It also represented the general mood of our small community of the past week.

The school student body suffered yet another tragedy. An 8th grade student lost his life last Monday during surgery. His death was totally unexpected and the kids have taken it pretty hard. Actually the whole community has. He left behind a mother who is a widow. I can’t imagine what she must be going through, having buried her husband when her son was only 1 and now she has to lay her son to rest too.

It’s during such tragedy’s like this that I’m reminded how fragile life truly is, and how I just don’t know if we can have tomorrow…….together.

It’s the last week of school before we have a much welcomed break. it will only be a week but I think it will do us all some good.
