Corner View – the incredible, the mysterious moustache.

Thanks for hosting CV Cate, and thanks for the theme.  This was a tricky one! Photo for CV

I did get my kids consent. Even JJ thought it was funny to see his sisters with a moustache!

Actually we had a good laugh!

This morning…

IMG_0002

JJ always wakes up in a very happy mood.  Always.  And this morning was no different.  But he was extra happy and a little excited because today he’s going to the nursery/play school.  He’s been asking to go school since last Friday after he went for the day to try it out.

He must have really enjoyed it because all weekend he would wake up and ask “JJ go school”.

He’s not ready to appreciate long weekend’s yet!!

IMG_0026 Well this is it – his first day!

I have humor, but I’m just a tad busy

my days have been real busy lately.

I had an article to write for the school magazine (thankfully that’s done now) , parent workshops to attend for different subjects, meetings for parent volunteers and fulfilling commitments that I made weeks ago when I didn’t think I would be quite so busy.

Do you ever do that,  commit to something a couple of days or weeks in advance and then when the time comes to fulfill that commitment your over committed!!

Maybe it’s just me and my lack of planning that causes my busyness, who knows!.  But it’s all good.   I’m just feeling tired, physically.

I’m looking forward to the weekend…… although I know already that  it’s going to be a busy one.  I have to go to China Town and search for some rubber ducks for a carnival that we’re  organizing for a refuge camp in a couple of weeks. I hope hubby is patient to allow me to side track at the market!!

hope your week is going well!

we don’t laugh because we are happy – we’re happy because we laugh.

William James.

IMG_0036p.s.  I know my photo has nothing to do with my post and I’m a day late for Corner View, but my son makes me laugh a lot.  Actually my kids remind me constantly to laugh at myself.

Only for a day

IMG_0048

I spent the day with this 11 year old boy from a nearby orphanage.  A couple of weeks ago I volunteered  to take some children from the nearby orphanages and girls and boys homes for an outing at the park and lunch.  And today was that day.

I have to admit that I was a little apprehensive.  I wasn’t too sure how it would go.  I’ve volunteered before with babies but never grown up kids. But when we arrived at the orphanage James smiled such a beautiful smile at me that I just knew he was the one for me, to adopt for the day.

There where 18 children from 4 different homes and about 23 volunteers, including a 12 year old boy and his family visiting from Australia.  Everyone was able to have a child for the day.   Many of the children have some kind of disability and some of the kids needed at least 2 people and thankfully we were able to do that.

James is confined to a wheel chair and not able to move his legs or arms very much.  He apparently understands a lot but is not able to communicate.

So for today I pushed him around in his wheel chair.  We  walked and then ran some around the park.  He enjoyed the running part very much.  The rush of wind in his face just made him laugh and smile a lot.   Then we  fed the fish together and walked over to a food court where we had lunch.  James has never been to a mall so this part of the day was also very very exciting for him.

It was sad to see these precious children living their lives like this.  And it’s hard to understand why….. ………

I only gave them a day out of my schedule but for those who work at these homes – God bless their faithful and serving hearts.

I was told that all the kids had a wonderful time.  And although I was tired at the end of it, so did I.

I look forward to volunteering again.IMG_0063

We were busy today and had to be present – physically and mentally so I couldn’t ask too many questions about James.  But I intend too.

Sunday

have you heard any of these sayings before:
In calm water every ship has a good captain. (from Switzerland)
or   It is no use fishing in front of the net. (from England)
And how about this one from the Ukraine:  Every road has two directions.
and this one from Bantu:  Water is never tired of  flowing.
DSCF2087photo Joshua at the Erawan waterfall.
Today I taught the  middle school kids at church.  And our topic was about worry.  It was interesting to hear about the things they worry about.  I admit that as adults we sometimes think that our children worry about such trivial “stuff” but some of their concerns are very real.  Our discussions were very interesting.
I went this morning prepared to teach and hopefully get the message across that “worry never really changed anything” and that there are ways to deal with their worries.  I hope they got the message.  I know for certain though that  I walked out of the class learning a whole lot more from the children that I was with today.
I was blessed.
Hope you all had a great weekend.

35!

No it’s not my birthday today but it is for my country, Papua New Guinea.

PNG photo is of the sunset at the Yacht Club back at home. (photo from a friend on FB, thanks Peter!)

Today is Independence day.  I know there where many celebrations back at home and of course on this day I wish I were at home to join in on the celebrations.

But I’m not so today I just thought of home, how far we’ve come and how much more we need to do to move forward.

Happy Independence Papua New Guinea.

I wanted to share this song.  It’s in my language (well one of the 850 languages that we have).  Oshen is the artist and “Mi Laik Kam” translated means “I want to come”.

You may not understand it but here’s just what the chorus says:

I see the ships sailing away and the airplanes flying above.

Rain fall on me while the sun shines on you.

I want to come, but it's too difficult; the mountains are too high and the ocean blocks my path.

corner view - “7”

** (edited – stitched my photos so I’m putting one photo – not 3)

What day of the week where you born?  Monday, Tuesday or maybe Friday?

Today’s CV theme is the number 7.  I’m not being very creative here.  I’m doing the days of the week but of course in relation to my corner.

I found this very interesting.  Now I understand why there are so many different statues and poses and that each one has a meaning to it.7 budah chiang mai

If you ever visit a Thai temple you might see different Buddha images lined up in a row.  Each pose apparently shows what Buddha was doing on that particular day of the week.

I was born on a Friday and so the Buddha image for Friday is with the hands crossed over the chest and is in deep thought.   Apparently the gesture represents a complete spiritual transformation.

If you are curious to see what pose is represented for you then  click here.

I took these photos on our trip to Chiang Mai back in 2008.

Some lessons

IMG_0123So last week my 6 year old wanted to totally crash a birthday party over the weekend!!

She reasoned to me that I could take her to the play facility where the party was going to be (because of course it’s open to the public) but then when it would be cake and present time she just wouldn’t join  the “party”.

I laughed at my daughters shamelessness but I could also see the heartbreak in her eyes.  She just couldn’t understand why she hadn’t been  invited while her good friend was.

Oh dear… There are some lessons in life that you just can’t talk to your children about but they must also be experienced.  And so I felt that this was an opportune time  for us to talk  about  the reality of life.

So I  talked and she listened, reluctantly as I explained how sometimes we’ll just not be invited to a party,  and then there will  be times when she’ll be invited but her  friends might not be.

At 6 years of age I don’t know if you can totally understand that.  But the feeling of being left out always hurts.  And that’s natural, even as adults I think we feel that sometimes.  But that’s life.

Anyway the weekend came and went and Rohan and I made sure to keep her busy.  I guess it worked because she didn’t mention the party once!

Semi Vegans for a day and a phase….

IMG_0010Joshua is going through a phase. And it’s got to do with his jeans. He’s just loving them right now.   After every bath he  has to put them on.   I don’t know why you’d want to in the heat  but he’s doing it.  I know it will pass (and I hope soon) but for now I’m just watching!

Also today in support of the schools Health and Fitness week we stayed clear of meat today.  Well actually just red meat.  What can I say, as a family we like to eat meat, but for today I thought we’d join the school with it’s “meatless Monday”, so for dinner I made this soupChicken-and-Avocado-Soup

Actually I cook quite a few of Gina’s recipes because I do weight watchers and i love how she has the points with each recipe.

Anyway I’ve never thought of putting avocados in a soup before.   But I followed the recipe and wasn’t disappointed.  It was delicious!

Well Behaved children

DSC04545 I never know how the children will come into the nursery on Sunday mornings, or rather on the mornings that I’ve volunteered to mind and teach them.  It’s just the way it is, that unknown.

But today, bless their little hearts, they were awesome.  So mellow as they played side by side and sometimes together.  they were also  attentive to the story we shared.  We even painted and then shared some cheerios together.  I’d say it was a wonderful time all together.

DSCF8951It’s during these times that I am so aware of how much influence we have on our children – whether they are our own or not.

hope you all had a great day today.

Friday’s Fave Five 59

FFF blue I love Friday’s.  I always have.  I’m thankful that I got through the week and then of course the anticipation of the weekend and what’s around the corner.

And of course it’s that time of the week again.  Time to reflect on the good things for the week.

Here’s my five:

1.  Biking.  My kids are still recovering and so I’ve not been able to join the serious bikers.  But I have managed to get some time for myself and bike around the lake.  These pretty flower made me happy, even on an overcast and muggy day.

IMG_0046-1

2.  Old letters and the memories.   I love reading through my old letters.  Letters that I received while I was at school and college. I was looking for some papers this week and I came across the letters.  And so I sat down and went down memory lane.

3. Big Hearts.  The church we attend is planning a trip to a refugee camp on the border of Thailand and Burma in October.  For this trip we’re collecting stationary items that the children can use for their classes. Yhis week I noticed a  family donated close to a thousand exercise books.  It’s just such a wonderful thing to see when people give, and give big. There are  many good people out there.

4.  The Pool.  It sure is the quickest way to cool down in the humidity. I’m ever so grateful for it.

DSCF6004

5.  My rocking chair.  I bought this chair for 5 dollars back in the US at a yard sale.  I sent it in to be re-upholstered2 weeks ago.  They told me it would take a month but I got it back yesterday.  I’ve fallen in love with it all over again.IMG_0016

Well that’s it.  I hope you had a great week.  Thanks again Susanne.  You’re a great host.

Corner View - School

Hooray for Corner View.  I hope you all had a great summer and are ready for the new year! (well a new school year that is)

I loved school.  Every stage that I went through, I enjoyed.  From elementary, to middle and high school and even college.  But the stage that stands out the most for me would have to be middle school which I did at a boarding school.  Yes, at the tender age of 11 I was sent off .  Of course it was difficult in the beginning, especially to be away from my family but as time went by I grew up, made some wonderful friends and to this day I have no regrets.

boarders for CVimage from the Nuntius 1989 – Revenswood School for Girls.

Actually looking back on the whole boarding experience, I think it prepared me in so many ways for the kind of life that I live now – having to move and make our home in new places every 3 or 4 years.

Today I’m thankful for the school that my kids go to. it’s diverse, and I feel geared towards raising not only academically prepared students but also to be contributing global citizens.  ISB Panorama

In the 3 years I’ve been here I’m always amazed at how the children are so accepting of each other and how willing and interested they are to learn about each others countries.  Even today my first grader came home  excited to tell me that one of her classmates was celebrating a Jewish holiday and that they got to share food together that his mother had brought in for the whole class.

I just love that – for me those are  precious learning moments.  IMG_0405 entrance to the elementary school.

Friday’s Fave Five # 58

FFF blue

Welcome to my Fave Five’s for this week.  It’s been a good week except for Joshua getting sick (and now Tanysha isn’t feeling so good) – we didn’t even make it all the way home from school this afternoon when she had to make a stop to throw up.

I’m not sure what’s going on but all I can do is keep them hydrated.

Anyway here are my fave five’s for this week:

1.   Meeting new friends at the Paulner Garden Restaurant. This was actually my husband and I our first time to this place and also our first time to join other couples in what’s called a Life Group from our church. The fellowship was great and so was the food.  I’m not a beer gal so I didn’t try the beer. But I’m told it’s great.

2. Catching up with a friend.  This week I decided to seek out a friend that I haven’t spoken too in a while.  While I understand our lives are busy and we always seem to be doing stuff i just felt that I had to go see her.  It was nice to hear what’s happening in her life now and her daughter’s and surprisingly she was happy to see me because she had some things she wanted to get off her chest but wasn’t sure who to share with.  It was time well spent.

3.  My bible study group. This week we started our classes and I like the group of ladies I’m with.  It’s a small group which I like because we’ll get to know each other better.  I have bumped into many of them before but have never stopped to chat.  I look forward to learning with them and from them as we go through the study together.

4.  Coffee.  with only very few hours of sleep the last couple of nights, I’m thankful for the kick that a good cup of coffee gave me in the mornings while I made sure the girls got off to school all right.

5.  My washer and dryer and housekeeper.  With a 2 year old throwing up over and over again and having to use lots and lots of towels I once again appreciated my washer and dryer very much.  And of course the housekeeper who is just so great and is another set of hands to help in times like this.

Sorry just gotta break the rules this Friday……

6.  Hearing from my sister. She is expecting her son any moment now.  This was her last week at work.  It’s just such a blessing and joy for her (and me) to see her go through this after she was told that she wouldn’t be able to get pregnant.  I look forward to being an Aunt again.

What’s made your week?  Do share.

Thanks Susanne for hosting FFF.  Check out what other bloggers are happy about.

Happy Weekend.
