Tired and Happy.

It’s late but I just wanted to share that today “International Day” was a success.

DSCF3610First up was the parade of nations. and then the children visited classrooms that were turned into countries.

Here’s an example of 2 countries:

below are the  rice fields of Thailand.DSCF3767 DSCF3770 and different types of rice from Thailand.

My girls had lots of fun learning about the different countries through play.  They did arts and crafts and also some tasting, smelling and seeing foods from around the world.

Rohan and I also enjoyed  sharing our country with these young and curious minds.

DSCF3796these kids along with their teacher were asking why shells are important in PNG while making themselves a necklace. DSCF3818 experiencing how to scrape a coconut.

I am so convinced that through such experiences like this they become better people and great ambassadors for themselves and their countries.

It was a wonderful day.

(but now I’m tired and ready for bed)

International Day.

The classroom is ready and we are good to go.

DSCF3539It’s been hard work but anytime you have an opportunity to learn and share about each other’s country, culture and customs we should.

I’ve spent the last 2 days with the kindergarteners sharing a folk story of how the island of Papua New Guinea came about. That was a lot of fun.

And today I have more to share with the 5th graders.

Ida’s Challenge – 3/12 Stranger

Here is week 3 of this challenge.  It’s harder than I thought!!

This is my photo – Portrait of monk(s) receiving alms.

something I learnt from this – you’re not allowed to touch the monk.  All the items that are donated is all that they live on.  So they do really rely on the generosity of the public to survive.

IMGP0439I took this photo at school.  I guess it was a controlled area for the monks to be receiving.  Usually they are on the streets.

But hey they’re still strangers!

To see who else is playing along visit Ida.

Corner View: Wisdom from an Elder.

DSCF6700Almost 8 years ago when we were packing to leave behind everything we knew and all that we were familiar with,  my dear father in law sat my husband and I down and gave us a talk.

He talked about the many things involved in the life of an expat but the one thing I always remember from that talk is this:

He said to us,  no matter where you go and make your home, remember to do this one thing:  teach your children their  mother tongue.  Your children will be exposed to a lot of things in their life, they will learn about different cultures and customs and see many different things, but make sure they  know their language.    It is their language that will always remind them of their roots and their identity.

I’ve always wondered why he said that to us.  Maybe it’s because we come from a country that boasts over 750 different languages. But as we’ve travelled here and there his words have become a real reminder to me that my children must know their culture and heritage and their language.  And by knowing and embracing their own they will be more appreciative of their friends and peers cultures, customs and languages.

My husband and I speak to our children in our languages (yes he speaks a different language to me)! Our kids are not there yet but we are making progress!!

Ida’s Challenge – 2/12 Stranger.

Here’s my stranger for week 2 of this challenge.

I posted these same pictures over at my 365 project blog and I thought I’d use them here.

Here’s my Portrait of a Happy Stranger.DSCF3469 This is what they were doing.

Burning something.

I’m still trying to find out what exactly they were doing, but I’m sure it has something to do with Chinese New Year.
